Product Description
CMC, Carboxymethyl Cellulose, also known as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, is an anionic polymer compound derived from natural cellulose through chemical reactions. Its molecular weight ranges from several thousand to one million, with various important physical and chemical properties and application fields.
Main properties of CMC
Appearance and solubility: CMC appears as white or slightly yellow flocculent fiber powder or particles, odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. It is easily soluble in cold or hot water, forming a transparent solution with a certain viscosity. However, it is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, isopropanol, and acetone, but soluble in ethanol or acetone solutions containing 60% water.
Stability: CMC is thermally stable, but viscosity decreases with increasing temperature. It is stable within the pH range of 2-10, and solid precipitation occurs when the pH is below 2; When the pH value is above 10, the viscosity will decrease. In addition, CMC also has hygroscopicity.
Viscosity and degree of substitution: The viscosity of CMC is closely related to its degree of substitution. Substitution degree refers to the degree to which hydroxyl groups in cellulose molecules are replaced by carboxymethyl groups. Generally speaking, the higher the degree of substitution, the better the solubility, emulsification, thickening, stability, acid resistance, and salt resistance of CMC.
